Perpetual makes short work of Mapua for solo third

The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Lady Altas made full use of a week-long rest, whitewashing the hapless Mapua University Lady Cardinals, 25-18, 25-23, 25-12, Tuesday afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Lourdes Clemente, Bianca Tripoli, and Jowie Verzosa all finished with 11 points for the Las Piñas-based squad. Clemente led the Altas in attacks and blocks with nine and two, respectively. On the other hand, seven of Verzosa’s markers came from serves.

Despite their loss against the Arellano University almost a week ago, head coach Macky Carino was pleased with how his team is improving. “Although may all kami, malaki ring morale boost sa ‘min,” he said.

“Yung team ko unti-unting nagma-mature. Yun rin naman din ang plano ko na every game, dapat nag-i-improve,” the mentor added.

Perpetual dominated all scoring skills, but it was the serves that totally killed the Cardinals, especially in that final frame.

Now at third place, Carino knew that their chances of making the semifinals have grown, but emphasized that they need to work for it. “Hindi kami pwedeng makampante. One game at a time: pag-aaralan namin tong Letran, then CSB,” he ended.

Dianne Latayan was the lone bright spot for the Cards with 10 points.

The Altas’ game against Colegio de San Juan de Letran (3-4) will be on Friday. Mapua (0-8) will close their season when they face College of Saint Benilde (4-3) on Thursday.

The Scores:

UPHSD 3 – Clemente 11, Tripoli 11, Verzosa 11, Imbo 5, Gual 5, Umandal 5, Oliva 2, Llorente 1, Sangalang 1, Estanislao 1, Medalla L, Coching L.
