Mikey Williams insisted that there remain lots to learn despite a rousing performance in TNT’s 2021 Honda PBA Philippine Cup duel with Meralco, Friday.
The Fil-Am guard turned in his best game of the season thus far with 27 points on a 55-percent clip from the floor, alongside four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in over 34 minutes as he led the Tropang Giga to a 91-76 victory.
This comes after he submitted 16 markers in their 96-76 conquest of Blackwater two days ago, indicative that he’s on an upward trajectory in terms of integrating with his team and getting used to the league’s style of play.
Williams — who only averaged 10.7 points on 26.7-percent shooting from the field in his first three games — begged to differ, though.
“Not quite yet. I still have a lot of work to do,” the 29-year-old said moments after the win, which extended the Tropa’s unbeaten run to five.
“This is just one game. There are plenty more games to come.”
For now, the former NBA G League veteran is just absorbing whatever there is to learn from his coaches and teammates.
“My coaches and my teammates, they’re still helping me adjust and I thank them gratefully for that. We’re just gonna keep at it and keep getting back to work and go from there,” said Williams.
One of those he’s extremely grateful to be around with is no less than TNT main man Jayson Castro, whom he called a ‘tremendous general.’
The 35-year-old was also one of the key reasons behind their win over the Bolts, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the second period as he led the Texters’ breakaway that started the one-sided affair all the way through.
“Jayson’s a tremendous general, a leader for the team,” said the no. 4 overall pick. “He’s our quiet captain and he definitely keeps us on the line.
“It’s just wonderful to learn from such a great mind.”
