Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Mark Caguioa had a surprise for the Never Say Die-faithful, Monday evening. Instead of his iconic number 47 emblazed on his chest, the 16-year veteran was wearing number 13. And it was his way of reminiscing about the times he played with his running-mate Jayjay Helterbrand.
For 15 years, Caguioa and Helterbrand, popularly known as the Fast and the Furious, created magic on the court en route to six championships. Both also became league Most Valuable Player during that run.
However, after Ginebra won the 2017 Governors’ Cup, the 41-year-old Helterbrand decided to call it a day after a stellar 17-year run.
Saddened, Caguioa decided to wear number 13 for the entire course of the 2017-18 Philippine Cup.
Besides this, the 6-foot-1 guard also made history during Christmas Clasico as he joined an elite club.
With 7:46 remaining in the second quarter of Ginebra’s 89-78 win, Caguioa was able to knock down his 700th career triple. He finished the game with seven points and six rebounds.
He is only the 18th players in league history to achieve such a feat according to PBA lead statistician Fidel Mangonon.
