“Mang Will” Abarientos, beloved Ateneo utility, passes away at 66

Ateneo de Manila University mourns the loss of one of its most beloved basketball staff members Will Abarientos (July 16, 1958-August 28, 2024) as he passed away on Wednesday at the age of 66 due to complications from diabetes.

Fondly known as “Mang Will,” he was a beloved figure among the Ateneo community, having dedicated more than two decades of his life to the university as part of the team’s utility crew and as a referee.

Mang Will’s journey with the Blue Eagles began over 20 years ago, and his presence quickly became a comforting and uplifting part of the team’s daily life.

He was more than just a staff member; he was a friend, a mentor, and a confidant for countless players and coaches who donned the Blue and White.

Known for his warm smile and quick wit, Mang Will had a unique ability to bring laughter to those around him, making even the toughest training days a bit brighter.

Throughout his tenure, Mang Will was a steadfast supporter of Ateneo’s pursuit of excellence.

He was a proud part of the Blue Eagles’ journey to glory, celebrating with the team through their many triumphs in UAAP Seasons 65, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 80, 81, 82, and 85.

Details for his wake and final arrangements have yet to be announced.
