During Game 3 of the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Finals pitting the Cignal-San Beda HD Hawkeyes against the Racal Tile Masters, there were notable personalities present in the stands. There were the officials from both teams, and PBA scouts and team managers.
One manager present was Joe Ramos, the assistant team manager of the Mahindra Floodbuster. Right after the final buzzer had sounded on a game that saw Cignal-San Beda escape Racal to bag the Aspirants’ Cup crown, Ramos immediately went to the dugout, looking for one particular player: Jackson Corpuz.
“We wanted to sign him up earlier, but with Racal’s success in the playoffs, we did not want to disrupt their run,” Ramos told Tiebreaker Times, Wednesday evening.
The 6-foot-4 forward may have come short of winning a D-League crown but his stellar play — that resulted in norms of 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds — did not go unnoticed, as he was immediately signed by the Floodbuster for the rest of the season.
And Ramos guaranteed that the product of Philippine Christian University, who had gone undrafted in the 2014 PBA Draft, will suit-up for them as soon as possible.
“Jack Corpuz will play on Sunday [against TNT].”
