Lauren Hoffman and John Cabang made their respective exits in their Olympic debuts in the women’s 400-meter hurdles and the men’s 100-meter hurdles, each under contrasting circumstances.
Hoffman attacked her repechage heat in the longer hurdles event with determination, but it was not enough as she finished last in the second-chance race with a time of 58.28 seconds.
It was unfortunate for the former US NCAA standout, as she was within reach of qualifying when the race headed into the back straight.
However, Hoffman gassed out at the bend near the home stretch and could not recover at the finish.
On the other hand, Cabang posted on his social media accounts that he would not be racing in his repechage heat on Tuesday afternoon.
The Basque Country-born Filipino trackster revealed he has an injury that would prevent him from performing well in the race.
