University of the East’s 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Far Eastern University was a first in many ways.
It is the Lady Warriors’ first win in the UAAP Season 84, in their final game nonetheless, to avoid being winless and finish the tournament at 1-13.
But this is UE’s first triumph as well in the UAAP since April 13, 2019 when it beat Adamson University, 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 in Season 81. Then the Lady Warriors went on a 17-game losing skid before today.
Factoring in the COVID-19 pandemic where the league stopped for two years, it has been 1,153 days since UE won a game in the collegiate tourney.
“Very happy kasi we ended the season on a high not na at least, nakuha talaga ‘yung elusive win na ‘yan,” said Lady Warriors head coach Ronwald Dimaculangan.
That was not the only cold spell that UE finally broke out of today.
The Lady Warriors finally ended up on the better side of things against the Lady Tamaraws, snapping a 19-game losing streak against FEU.
The last time UE won over the Lady Tamaraws? December 8, 2010, exactly 4201 days ago.
But the biggest of all skids was this is UE’s first win across all sports this season.
The Red Warriors basketball team went 0-14 in their campaign while the UE Pep Squad placed fifth in the cheerdance competition.
UE did not have participating teams in men’s beach volleyball, men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball, men’s and women’s chess, and co-ed poomsae.
To recap, this is UE’s first and only win in the entirety of UAAP Season 84.
And for that, Dimaculangan only has this to say.
“Thankful kami na we were able to break the curse.”
