In a rare site, Grethcel Soltones was benched for a stretch.
Perennial contenders San Sebastian College Recollectos Lady Stags are still unscathed in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball wars. A closer look at their first three matches, however, shows the alarming state of the winningest program in the league, who are trying to end a peculiar four-year title drought.
With their starting six intact and still touting two-time MVP Grethcel Soltones, the Lady Stags struggled in their first match against a new-look Arellano University Lady Chiefs. Most recently, the Lady Knights shook last year’s runners-up in a another five-setter.
Even team captain Soltones has been inconsistent, even having to be subbed out against Letran to get her act together.
“Siguro off [day] lang talaga namin,” Soltones said of their lackluster outing.
“Pero kasalanan din namin. Hindi kami nag-uusap.”
The 21-year-old, however, admitted that they were stunned by what the Lady Knights showed. Nonetheless, when the going gets tough the Iron Lady and her squad eked out the win when it mattered.
“Siguro, ginawa na lang namin, kahit ganun ‘yung nangyayari, sama-sama pa rin kami,” said Soltones, who finished the game with 15 points.
Moving forward, the graduating open hitter knows her team needs to start picking up their performance, keeping in mind that the goal is not to win a match, but to win a championship. Something that their head coach Roger Gorayeb constantly reminds them to do.
