The Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates came from behind, overcoming the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights in five sets, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10, in the opening game of the NCAA Season 92 Women’s Volleyball tournament, Monday morning at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Both teams picked up their games from the service line as the first ball dictated how the match progressed.
LPU head coach Emil Lontoc was very much aware of that. He shared, “Naramdaman ko nag-iingat sila, nawala kumpiyansa nila, natatakot silang magkamali. Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Recover kayo, recover kayo. Kailangan maging normal kayo at yung bola kaya niyong receive-in.'”
The Lady Pirates did just that and with better reception and floor coverage, getting production from virtually every position in the fourth and fifth sets.
Team captain Che Sindayen led the charge of Lyceum with a huge 24-point outing, 21 of those coming from attacks. The skipper also had 9 digs and a number of good receptions to anchor the Pirates on the defensive end.
Fellow outside hitter Czarina Orros had 14 points, while middle attackers La Rainne Fabay and Christine Miralles finished with 11 markers each.
Mikaela Lopez carried the Lady Knights with 12 points, while Charm Simborio had 28 excellent sets in her first game in Letran uniform.
