Justin Lozano remained conscious after a frightening fall late in Jose Rizal University’s clash with Mapua University in the NCAA Season 101 Seniors Basketball Tournament on Friday.
The freak accident occurred at the 2:08 mark of the fourth quarter when Lozano fell awkwardly after attempting to block Cyrus Nitura.
He hit his head on the floor and had to be stretchered off as play was halted, drawing concern from both teams.
According to Heavy Bombers team manager Chris Conwi, Lozano was conscious but was immediately rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Sta. Mesa, Manila, for a CT scan and other tests to ensure his safety.
Lozano had been one of the top performers of the game. He had tallied 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals — including a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in the first half and eight quick points in the opening quarter.
His efforts helped the Heavy Bombers secure a victory over defending champion Mapua, keeping the team competitive in a tough Group B.
The win was also an emotional one for head coach Nani Epondulan, who once served as an assistant coach for the Cardinals.
“Hirap,” expressed Epondulan.
“It’s bittersweet kasi galing ako dun. Hindi ko naman inaalis ang mga natutunan ko kay Coach Randy (Alcantara). I just take off my hat sa mga players ko,” added the former NCAA MVP, who served as a deputy for Mapua last season.
Still, Epondulan’s thoughts were with Lozano.
“Siyempre, prayers kay Justin. He is one of my key players,” said Epondulan.
“Aksidente talaga yung nangyari and I hope okay siya.”
