San Miguel’s quest for another Philippine Cup crown has suffered a major blow.
The team announced on Wednesday morning that June Mar Fajardo will be sidelined indefinitely due to a complete fracture of his right tibia.
The injury occurred last Monday. The 6-foot-10 Cebuano had surgery immediately the next day.
“During this rehabilitation phase, the team regrets that he won’t be able to play for the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Cup,” the statement read.
“June Mar, for his part, is also saddened that he may not be able to join any upcoming international competitions.”
Manning the frontline for the Beermen for the upcoming all-Filipino conference are Mo Tautuaa and Billy Mamaril.
Last season, Fajardo averaged 18.8 points, 13.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He is also the leading candidate to win the PBA Season 44 Most Valuable Player plum.
At a minimum, Fajardo could miss the next six months. And San Miguel’s brass assured that they won’t rush him back to the court, saying that their priority is his full recovery.
“The San Miguel Beermen management is committed to ensuring that June Mar will get the best medical care, and would like to thank fans for the messages of concern and well wishes.”
