Jones Cup: Gilas Women absorb sweep at hands of Chinese-Taipei

Gilas Pilipinas Women could not overcome the hot-shooting of Chinese-Taipei’s youth team, falling to the younger ‘White’ team, 83-94, on Monday at Heping Basketball Gymnasium.

The Philippines fell to 1-2 in the competition, losing to the Blue team, 89-85, before notching its first-ever win in the tournament at the expense of Iran, 64-60.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair that saw Gilas hold a 68-64 lead heading into the final frame.

However, the young guns of Chinese-Taipei got hot in the final frame, dropping 26 points to subdue Gilas.

It was the veterans who delivered for the Filipinas, with Afril Bernardino leading the way with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field with six rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.

Jack Animam produced 18 points and nine boards while Janine Pontejos added 11 markers.

After notching double-figures in the first two games of the tournament, Kacey dela Rosa was limited to just six attempts by the pesky Taiwanese defense, finishing with four points and six rebounds.

Four players finished in double-figures for Chinese-Taipei White, who notched their first win of the tournament.

It will be a tough final two days for Gilas Women as they take on the club teams in the tourney.

They will face Korea’s Busan BNK Sum on Tuesday before capping their campaign against Japan’s Chanson V-Magic on Wednesday.

Dai Yiting fired 19 points on five treys while Zhang Yiwen added 17 points on an excellent 8-of-11 shooting clip.

Yu Chinhua and Liu Huiru added 15 and 14 markers, respectively.
