A star was born Friday evening as Filipina atomweight Jomary Torres showed her might, literally dropping April Osenio to open ONE Championship: Global Superheroes at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Zambaguena Jomary Torres made a statement, sending shockwaves through ONE Championship’s Atomweight division with an emphatic win over Team Lakay’s April Osenio.
This is Torres’ fourth win in a row, three inside the ONE cage. Osenio, on the other hand, dropped her third straight bout to fall to 2-4.
“Salamat kay God na binigay niya sa akin yung panalo na ito pati sa coaches ko na nagtiwala sa akin,” shared an emotional Torres. “Hindi ko expect na… First time ko na-experience ito.”
Needing to end her skid, Osenio attempted a guillotine choke early. She quickly transitioned to an armbar attempt on the prone right arm of Torres.
As the more powerful fighter, Torres lifted Osenio with all her might before sending her crashing back down. The blow from the slam knocked the Team Lakay fighter senseless. A few punches for good measure called a stoppage 40 seconds in.
“Ina-accept ko kahit ano ang ibibigay ng ONE sa akin,” the 21-year-old upstart said when asked what she wants next.
Coming off a loss last August 18, Edward Kelly was able to make it up with an emphatic knockout of Cambodian fighter Meas Meul.
“First of all, maraming salamat sa lahat ng Pilipino. Naging emotional lang ako kasi last time natalo ako kahit nag-train ako ng maayos. Na-disappoint ako ng husto nun,” shared Kelly. “Ngayon, na-knock out ko yung kalaban ko. I hope you understand because I’m happy not just for myself but also for my team.”
The match itself was short and sweet as Kelly set the record for fastest knockout win in ONE Championship’s featherweight division.
The two fighters immediately went to blows to start the bout. However, as Meul went for a leg kick, Kelly went for a combination. Thinking that the Filipino would attempt a punch, the Cambodian ducked but was met with a right knee that knocked him out cold.
The win lifted Kelly’s slate to 10-4, while handing Meul his first loss in seven bouts.
Indian fighter Rajinder Meena (9-7) had a monumental outing as he made quick work of Zhang Ze Hao (2-1) for his first-ever win inside the ONE cage. Indonesian flyweight Andrian Matheis (4-3) opened the night with a vicious TKO win over Malaysian Eddey Kalai (0-3).
