Japeth Aguilar will fill Ginebra’s center spot
The 2017 Commissioners Cup has seen its imports produce monster numbers. From Eugene Phelps’ 53-point outing, to the 20-20 games that have become the norm, the PBA has been treated to this type of games from the giants of the league.
“Just watching them, monster stats yung prino-produce nila, “ shared Japeth Aguilar, as Ginebra has been idle for the last two weeks.
“It’s crazy, it’s crazy talaga.”
However, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel will enter the tournament with a distinct “disadvantage” as Justin Brownlee only stands at 6-foot-7, at least two inches shy of the rest of the field.
“We’re looking forward sa journey sa Commissioner’s Cup,” Aguilar added.
“Ito kasi yung maglalaro si Justin na yung mga counterpart niya, hindi niya kasing height so whatever the journey is, parang preparation na rin ito sa Governors’ Cup to defend our title.”
Knowing this, 6-foot-9 big man knows that he will be plugged in as center for the duration of the conference.
“Knowing coach Tim [Cone], magiging team defense yan. Mainly, ako pa rin mag-fi-fill sa center position pero madami yang defensive scheme,” the native of Sasmuan, Pampanga shared.
And with the pesky yet stifling defense they are known for, Aguilar and the rest of the Gin Kings are prepared to double- or even triple-team the opposing team’s reinforcement.
“I will do the best I can, alam mo naman yung mga import, NBA veterans pa pero confident naman ako sa teammates ko na tutulungan nila ako,” he closed.
Ginebra will open their 2017 PBA Commissioners Cup campaign on Saturday, April 1, when they take on the Phoenix Fuel Masters in Panabo City, Davao.
