Hidilyn Diaz is now a world champion.
The current Olympic champion annexed the world title to her list of accolades after ruling the Women’s minus-55 kg in the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships, Thursday morning (Philippine time) at the Gran Carpa Americas Conferias in Bogota, Colombia.
Diaz bested 20 others including hometown bet Rosalba Morales with a total of 207 kilograms, a good eight kilos ahead of the Colombian.
The Filipino stalwart registered 93 kg for the snatch to bag the gold in that portion of the competition. She earlier lifted 90 kg, but could not further lift 96.
Ana Gabriela Lopez of Mexico came close to snagging the snatch gold, but her two attempts at 94 went begging to settle for the silver in the portion.
Diaz, on the other hand, went big once more with her clean and jerk. The two-time SEA Games gold medalist had to just carry 114 into the scorecards after tries at 117 and 121 were for naught.
The weight, though, was enough for the gold in the clean and jerk, and, eventually, the total as Morales only had 110 kg to show in the portion.
Shoely Mego of Peru took the clean and jerk bronze with best lift of 109.
Mexico’s Lopez came in third overall with a total lift of 198.
