Newcomer Immaculada Concepcion College rediscovered its winning form just in time, pulling off a stunning reverse sweep against University of Batangas in its do-or-die match, 13-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-13, to claim the Universities and Colleges Athletic League-PGFlex Season 7 Volleyball Championship on Tuesday at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Left on the brink after losing the first two sets, the Lady Blue Hawks regrouped in the third and mounted a spirited comeback.
They outlasted the Lady Brahmans in a pulsating fifth set, etching a memorable conclusion to their league debut.
The victory not only secured ICC’s first championship but also denied UB a volleyball title sweep, as the Brahmans had earlier edged the Blue Hawks in another five-set thriller (25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 17-15) to clinch the men’s championship.
Anchored by the stellar performances of Andrea Caparal, Marjorie Orpilla, and Angeliz Cate Cosme, the Lady Blue Hawks nearly completed a title sweep in the eight-team tournament after dominating Game 1 with a 25-15, 25-15 win last Friday.
However, the Lady Brahmans mounted a furious rally to take Game 2, forcing a decisive third game.
This time, ICC flipped the script. Caparal delivered a masterful performance, tallying 27 points built on 24 attacks, two blocks, and a service ace.
The power-hitting spiker was also a standout in Game 2, where she registered 28 points.
The event was backed by sponsors including Akari, Advance Solutions Inc., Smart Sports, Spalding, Team Rebel Sports, Quintana Sports, Crane Faucet, Hapee Toothpaste, Jiang Nan Restaurant, Vital, TopFlite Academy, Maruyama, and Gerry’s Grill.
Meanwhile, UCAL’s basketball competition is set to tip off next month.
