Gumabao rues complacency, lack of finish in Game 1 loss

The Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors were well on their way to taking Game One, leading the fourth set against the Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers. But the Lady Warriors crumbled.

With the wave of momentum flipped, the fifth set became a thrashing, putting the Lady Warriors again behind the eight ball without any room for losses.

Team captain Michele Gumabao lamented the loss, emphasizing her team’s sudden loss of desire down the stretch.SVL-2016-Air-Force-vs.-Pocari-Sweat-Gumabao-2287 Gumabao rues complacency, lack of finish in Game 1 loss News PVL Volleyball - philippine sports news

“We relaxed – ang aga namin nag-relax, ang aga namin nagyabang. Tumigil kami, basically,” said the former La Salle Lady Spiker, who topped all scorers with 22 points. “We handed over the game, tumigil kami kumilos, ayaw naming paghirapan ‘yung bola.”

“And ‘yun ‘yung ginawa ng Air Force, pinaghirapan nila bawat puntos. They deserved that win. It’s hard for me to say, but they wanted it more.”

“We don’t deserve that win. We deserve harder training. We need to get our hearts and minds in check,” she continued.

The Lady Warriors had just come off a grueling three-game series against powerhouse Bali Pure Water Defenders. Gumabao leans on her team’s character during do-or-die games.

“We work well in do-or-die games and we’re gonna prove that this Saturday. It’s not the end. We have two games more and we’re gonna win it,” Gumabao expressed.

“Air Force wants the championship. We just have to want it more.”
