Aljon Mariano has been reactivated by Ginebra San Miguel ahead of its 2022 PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals against TNT.
The 6-foot-4 forward hasn’t played in the season-ending conference due to a leg injury, which unfortunately came just months after recovering from the two surgeries he underwent to remove bone spurs on his foot.
He was reinstated in place of Maurice Shaw, who’s been relegated to the Gin Kings’ unrestricted free agent list with rights to salary (UFAWR2RS).
Mariano’s return, should he suit up, is surely a welcome boost for a team that’s been hounded by injuries practically all throughout the season.
Ginebra will be up against the third-seeded TNT, and will have to overcome the latter’s twice-to-beat advantage to keep its title retention bid alive.
It will be a rematch of the 2021 Philippine Cup quarters, which saw the Tropang Giga end the Barangay’s reign by maximizing their win-once incentive.
That game, coincidentally, was the last time Mariano had played. There, he only had three points as he suffered an ankle injury in the second period.
The University of Santo Tomas product played for nine games in the Bacolor bubble and averaged 4.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
