Gilas Women keep fighting but Germany proves too strong in World Cup qualifiers


Gilas Pilipinas Women dropped to 0–2 in the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament after absorbing a gallant 80–113 loss to unbeaten world No. 12 Germany on Friday morning (Manila time) at the Astroballe in Lyon, France.

Also sitting at 0–2 in Tournament D is Colombia, which fell to 2–0 France, 88–48.

Meanwhile, South Korea evened its record at 1–1 after a 77–60 victory over Nigeria, the reigning champions of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The Philippines kept pace with Germany early before the hosts of the World Cup proper erupted for a 33-point second quarter to build a commanding 68–48 lead.

Germany’s advantage ballooned to as much as 30 points, but the wards of Patrick Aquino continued to battle until the final buzzer.

Sumayah Sugapong led Gilas with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with four assists. Afril Bernardino tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.

Janine Pontejos knocked down three triples for 11 points, while Kent Pastrana and Kacey dela Rosa added nine and eight points, respectively.

The Philippines will look to secure its first win on Saturday against Nigeria at 9:00 PM.

For Germany, Emily Bessoir led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Frieda Bühner contributed 19 points.
