CARMONA, CAVITE — It was third time’s the charm for the Azkals Development Team after finally sealing a win in the 2020 season of the PFL sponsored by Qatar Airways, with a 2-0 victory over Mendiola, Tuesday at the PFF National Training Center.
With the game still in the balance, a header by two-time UAAP MVP Jarvey Gayoso finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute.
While the debate over his best position won’t end anytime soon, no one can argue against his deadly instinct in front of goal.
“We gave Jarvey a go up front,” said ADT coach Scott Cooper. “He took his goal very well. He showed sharp movements.”
The 23-year-old’s goal opened the floodgates for ADT.
Come the 81st minute, former De La Salle Green Archer Mathew Custodio tapped the ball come from Gayoso’s free kick to seal all three points for Cooper’s men.
The two goals were fitting rewards for the ADT, who had multiple chances to score in the first half.
Mendiola goalkeeper Kenry Balobo first denied Chima Uzoka’s attempt with a good stop. He then saved skipper Marvin Angeles’ penalty to keep the scores blank during that period.
Former University of the East star Mar Diano even had a chance to give the ADT a three-goal cushion late in the match. Unfortunately, though, his attempt hit the crossbar.
“I congratulate ADT for a good game today,” said Mendiola coach Dan Padernal.
Mendiola (0 points) plays Kaya Football Club-Iloilo at 9:00 AM. The ADT (3 points) goes up against Maharlika Manila Football Club afterwards at 4:30 PM on Friday.
