Gavina takes over as Rain or Shine head coach as Garcia remains as consultant

Chris Gavina has been appointed as the new head coach of Rain or Shine.

The team made the announcement across its social media accounts Monday, signalling a new start for the Elasto Painters ahead of the new PBA season.

“We are excited to announce the appointment of Chris Gavina as Rain or Shine’s Head Coach,” the team’s statement read.

Former head coach Caloy Garcia, though, isn’t going anywhere. The team has named him as their active consultant and head of basketball operations.

“Garcia will now be providing his veteran experience and leadership for the benefit of the team on and off the court,” said the team.

The Elasto Painters elevated Gavina, 42, to the role of chief mentor after he was part of Garcia’s coaching staff in the past three seasons.

This will mark his return to PBA head coaching after nearly four years, or since calling the shots for Mahindra (now Terrafirma) in 2017.

He was the only coach who brought Mahindra to the quarterfinals, doing so in the 2016 Governors’ Cup.

Gavina also had head-coaching stints in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, first with Valenzuela and then with Bacoor.

“He brings with him several years of experience as a coach in both the PBA and MPBL,” the team said.
