The journey ended for Filipino ace Treat Huey and his partner, Belarus’ Max Mirnyi, after they lost in a marathon match to Nicholas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the semifinals of the ongoing 2016 Wimbledon Championships, early Friday morning (Manila time).
The top-seeded Frenchmen came from a 2-1 deficit to avert an upset from the number 12 seeds.
Mahut and Herbert took advantage of the solitary break of serve to clinch the tight opening set at 6-4. Huey and Mirnyi then took the next two frames to be on the cusp of reaching the Final. The Filipino-Belorussian pair turned to their return game to comfortably win the second set at 6-3, before taking the third set on a tiebreak at 7-3.
The Frenchmen then used their service in the fourth set to force a deciding set, 6-4. Mahut and Herbert the continued this run to end Huey and Mirnyi’s road, winning the fifth and final set at 6-4 as well.
Huey will compete in the semifinal of the 2016 Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II against Chinese Taipei. The tie is slated for July 15-17 at the Philippine Columbian Association.
