Former University of the East head coach Lawrence Chongson (September 23, 1963-December 26, 2021) has passed away due to heart failure on Sunday.
He was 58 years old.
Chongson, a product of De La Salle University, gained fame during his time in UE back in UAAP Seasons 72-73.
Back in 2009, he replaced Dindo Pumaren as the team’s head coach. Under Chongson, the Red Warriors made it to the finals of Season 72, falling to Ateneo in three games.
He was later replaced by Jerry Codinera.
Chongson returned to UE in Season 82, finishing the season at seventh place with a 4-10 record.
Since then, Chongson was also the head coach of Boracay Rum and Tanduay in the PBA D-League.
Besides being a coach, Chongson was also the agent of the likes of Paul Lee and Roi Sumang.
Over the last two years, Chongson had been mourning the loss of his best friend Bong Tan, who passed away last November 2019 at the age of 53.
Chongson is survived by his wife, his son Dale, and his daughter Bloom.
