Filoil: Paranada, Salgado link up in endgame vs Perps as UE ends elims with 4-4 slate

Luis Salgado had a successful University of the East debut, helping the Red Warriors fend off University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 79-74, to close out their Group A campaign in the 2022 FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup, Thursday in San Juan City.

Salgado, a one-and-done prospect out of Stanislaus State, finished in with eight markers, seven rebounds, and four assists off the bench.

The Red Warriors finished the elimination round with a 4-4 record, while the Altas fell off to 2-4.

“Siguro ‘yung sa first three lang namin kasi ‘yun lang naman talaga ‘yung importante sa’min. ‘Yung una is manalo kami, then ‘yung second is kung pano namin maging consistent ‘yung pag panalo namin” said guard Jojo Antiporda as head coach Jack Santiago is in Los Angeles scouting for potential recruits.

“So para sa amin ‘yung parang pampa-boost na isang panalo lang, tapos ma-feel na namin kung ano ‘yung feeling ng panalo, tapos wala na kami pakiealam kung sino yung kalaban whether NCAA or UAAP [team] basta gusto namin makuha ‘yung panalo everytime para mas ganahan kami,” he added.

Down 62-65 and with 5:20 left in the game, Kyle Paranada carried the scoring cudgels for UE, scoring the next nine points for his side to gain a 71-70 lead.
With 1:25 remaining, Salgado sank a deep three to get the 78-74 advantage. Paranada then iced the game after splitting his free throws with nine seconds left, 79-74.

Paranda starred for the Red Warriors, producing a game-high 23 points on 60-percent shooting beyond the arc, along with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. CJ Payawal ended with 10 points, four steals, three rebounds, and two assists, while Noy Remogat and Onzo Lorenzana supplied nine points apiece.

Assistant coach Jamike Jarin called the shots in this game for the Red Warriors in lieu of head coach Jack Santiago. Jielo Razon, meanwhile, was absent on the Perpetual’s bench.

The Altas will have a one-week break before facing National University on August 18 at 9:00 a.m.
