Filipinas bow to Scotland, drop to Pinatar Cup bronze match

The Filipinas commenced their 2024 Pinatar Cup campaign with a 0-2 defeat against Scotland on Saturday at the Pinatar Arena.

Scotland advanced to the final against Finland, while the Philippines will face Slovenia in the bronze game. Both matches will be played this Tuesday.

Striker Martha Thomas stole the show for the Scots, who are ranked 25th in the world.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker scored a tap-in in the 22nd minute after Filipinas goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel made an initial save against Erin Cuthbert’s attempt.

Thomas then secured the win for Scotland with a header in the 36th minute as the Filipinas’ backline failed to spot her run from the far post.

In the second half, the Filipinas made an effort to get back into the match.

Katana Norman had a chance at goal that went over, while Sarina Bolden forced a save from Scotland goalkeeper Sandy MacIver.

This was the second meeting between both nations in this tournament.

Scotland also emerged victorious against the Philippines last year with a score of 2-1, with Meryll Serrano scoring a late consolation goal for the Filipinas.

Scotland XI: MacIver, Docherty, Corsie, Howard, Evans, Cuthbert, Kerr, Lauder, Hay, Emslie, Thomas.

Philippines XI: McDaniel, Cowart, Sawicki, Beard, Harrison, Eggesvik, Bolden, Quezada, Serrano, Norman, Guillou.
