UP Fighting Maroons escape Diliman College to advance to PCCL Final Four

NAGA CITY — University of the Philippines capped its three-game sweep of the PCCL Luzon Regional Championship with a 78-75 conquest of Diliman College, Tuesday at the Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum here.

Leading 74-65 with four minutes left, Kevine Gandjeto led an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just a solitary point with 1:22 left in the game.

James Spencer was able to stop the bleeding with a booming triple afterward, but Gandjeto answered right back with a basket underneath. UAAP Season 81 MVP Bright Akhuetie then split his charities with 19.8 seconds left to give UP a 78-75 lead.

The Blue Dragons could not knock down their shots late, as the Fighting Maroons advanced to the next stage.

To open its campaign last Saturday, UP romped Annunciation College of Bacon Sorsogon, 94-44. The Fighting Maroons followed it up with an 83-45 victory over Naga College Foundation.

UP joins fellow UAAP team Ateneo in the Final Four, which is set to be held in Davao at a date to be announced.
