FIBA to open disciplinary proceedings after Gilas-Boomers brawl

In the wake of the brawl between Gilas Pilipinas and the Australia Boomers in their second FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers encounter on Monday, FIBA announced that it will now be opening disciplinary proceedings over the incident.

The international federation made the announcement via Twitter, Monday night.

The incident led to the ejection of 13 players, with nine coming from Gilas: Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Andray Blatche, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, and Matthew Wright.

The bench-clearing event was sparked by the exchange between Pogoy and counterpart Chris Goulding, who played a huge part in the Australians’ breakaway that started in the second quarter.

The ejection of the nine players left the Nationals with just veterans Gabe Norwood and June Mar Fajardo, and the debuting Baser Amer. And the game still pushed through despite the home team being extremely undermanned.

Gilas lost by default, 53-89, as Fajardo and Norwood intentionally fouled themselves out of the game.

Now, with the proceedings about to start, FIBA said that the decisions will be made in the next days.

“The decision(s) will be communicated in the coming days.”
