FIBA: Gilas U16 avert Iran upset, settle for seventh


Gilas Pilipinas Boys Under-16 team made sure to end their FIBA Under-16 Asian Championship campaign on a high note, fending off a game Iran squad with a 95-87 triumph to finish in seventh place, Sunday at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar.

The Philippines ended its run with a 3-3 record, finishing with a 1-1 slate to end the elimination round.

Gilas Youth blasted Kazakhstan, 83-60, in the playoffs before bowing to Australia in the quarterfinals, 109–83.

The young Pinoys fell to rival South Korea yesterday, 88-77, to fall to the eighth-seventh classification phase game.

This is the Philippines’ worst finish in this age group’s continental meet. It’s previous worst was a fifth place finish during the 2015 edition of the tournament in Bangalore.

Alex Konov led the Philippines with 18 points, four assists, and three rebounds while fellow big man Zain Mahmood added 11 points and five rebounds.

Caelum Harris got 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal while Renzo Competente added 14 points built on four treys.

Gilas revelation Jared Bahay tallied 13 points, seven assists, and six rebounds as well.

Up next for Gilas Boys is the FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship later this year.
