With redemption on their minds, last season’s finalist Far Eastern University commenced its new campaign with a bang.
The Lady Tamaraws defeated Ateneo in a 7-0 drubbing in the UAAP Season 82 Women’s Football Tournament, Saturday afternoon at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Let Dimzon’s wards enjoyed a hot start to the contest as they were able to score three times in roughly 20 minutes.
The Lady Eagles’ defensive frailties were laid bare when Samantha Green found the back of the net in the 8th minute. Joyce Onrubia and Carmela Altiche then followed suit with close-range finishes in the 15th and 21st minutes.
“Good result for the start of the season, pero siyempre we know already na hindi na ito ‘yung core ng Ateneo. But still, ang titignan pa rin natin ang mga strong teams like La Salle, UST, and UP,” said Dimzon.
It was more of the same in the second half.
Jonela Albino continued the rout with a fine volley in the 52nd minute, before Onrubia secured her brace three minutes later. Substitute striker Dionesa Tolentin then scored two goals of her own in the 57th and 90+1 minutes.
The result gives FEU three points and a goal difference of plus-7, putting them atop the standings after this weekend. On the other hand, coach Bob Manlulo’s squad is at the bottom of the league table.
“Although maganda ang nilaro namin, ang mahirap lang kasi sobrang init so hindi mo mabasa kung ano pa ang kayang ilabas ng players. Ayun ang nagiging concern namin,” added Dimzon.
FEU shall resume its campaign against University of Santo Tomas on Saturday, March 14, 1:30 PM. On the other hand, Ateneo go up against the same opponents on Tuesday, March 18 at 4:00 PM. Both games take place at the same venue.
