Mindoro scored its second-straight win after eliminating Stan District 4, 101-88, in the 2021 Chooks-to-Go NBL Chairman’s Cup at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga, Sunday.
After leading by 23 in the early goings, the Disiplinados saw their lead slashed into two after a layup by Khenth Guiab in the fourth frame with 7:56 left, 79-77.
But Mindoro showed its discipline down the stretch.
The Disiplinados retaliated with eight unanswered points to restore order with 5:30 remaining, 87-77.
And they did not stop there as they went on another 14-4 blast to extend their lead to 20 points. That then put the game out of reach, 101-81.
JJ Caspe went 6-of-16 from deep to end with 22 points with seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block for Mindoro.
Rodel Vaygan chipped in 21 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals, while Luigi Natada had 15 points.
Dwight Garcia manned the paint with five blocks to go with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Actor Ejay Falcon seemed to be a lucky charm for Mindoro. His squad is 2-0 in games he played, raising their record to 3-5 for solo eighth place. He tallied two points on 1-of-6 shooting to go with three rebounds.
Guiab played all but three minutes and managed 22 points and 19 rebounds. Meanwhile, Mark Tec had 20 points but left the game with 6:17 left after incurring his sixth foul.
Heinz Umbreit also added 16 points and eight rebounds for the rock bottom SparTANs at 1-8 with one game left.
