Geje Eustaquio will be watching ONE Friday Fights 13 very closely.
Eustaquio’s brother-in-law Carlos Alvarez will take on Iran’s Reza Abasi in a featherweight contest positioned in his first-ever bout with ONE.
Despite being a newcomer in the professional ranks, Alvarez has received a vote of confidence from brother-in-law and former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio.
“Carlos has a very good attitude as an athlete. In terms of skill set, he can wrestle, he can strike, and he can do jiu-jitsu. The new breed of Team Lakay fighters is totally different from us because they got a complete arsenal of MMA,” Eustaquio said.
“I’m very happy to see my little brother-in-law finally compete in the big league. He sacrificed a lot to get to this point.”
The 24-year-old Baguio City native represented the Philippines at the 31st Southeast Asian Games as part of the national kickboxing team and made a quarterfinal appearance in the 67-kilogram full-contact category.
The opposition waiting for Alvarez is Abasi, someone who’s also making his debut in The Home of Martial Arts.
Though both men are vying for an impressive debut, Eustaquio believes it will all boil down to the quality of training during fight camp.
“I will be lying if I say I’m not nervous. When a member of your family is going to fight, things are different. But seeing Carlos’ preparation and hard work, I feel a victory is on the horizon,” he shared.
