EJ Obiena takes silver in virtual competition

EJ Obiena bagged another silver medal after finishing second in the ‘Who’s the Finest Pole Vaulter?’ virtual competition, Tuesday morning (Philippine time).

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games champion, who is headed to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, registered 5.60 meters in his second try at the said height, performing in a training center in Formia, Italy.

Obiena pushed for an attempt at his current season-best 5.70, but missed and eventually settled for 5.60.

Thiago Braz, the defending Olympic champion and the Filipino’s training partner, bounced back to claim another title with 5.70.

The Brazilian recently finished in fifth place in the most recent Herculis World Diamond League in Monaco with 5.50.

This is the third consecutive time Obiena has captured a podium finish in tournaments leading up to the next year’s quadrennial games. He earlier placed second to Braz in the 13th Triveneto Meet, then ended in third at the said Monaco meet.
