EJ Obiena resets PH record anew in Bydgoszcz

EJ Obiena rewrote record books again after setting a new Philippine record of 5.87 meters in a silver-medal finish in the Irena Szewińska Memorial/Bydgoszcz Cup at the Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium, Bydgoszcz, Poland, Thursday.

The result was 0.02 meters above his own national mark, which he set at his gold-medal performance at the Jump and Fly competition in Germany on June 12. He follows up his title from Leverkusen just last Monday.

Obiena took care of the said height after his second attempt. Still, a successful clearance at 5.92 did not come, as he settled for the final mark of 5.87 for the silver.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nilsen of the USA took care of 5.92 meters to bag the gold and the title.

Poland’s own Piotr Lisek took the bronze at 5.82 over reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz on countback.

The 25-year-old Obiena will next compete for one more event this month at Bauhas-Galan Wanda Diamond League event at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium in Sweden.
