EJ Obiena bags second straight gold with PSD Bank Indoor title


EJ Obiena is surely picking up confidence in this final stretch of preparations for the biggest campaign of his life. 

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics-bound pole vaulter captured his second straight gold last night. He registered 5.68 meters en route to winning the 2021 PSD Bank Indoor Meet, Sunday at the Helmut Kornig Hall in Dortmund, Germany.

He also pocketed gold two days prior in the ISTAF Indoor Meet.

Obiena continues his momentum after besting six other athletes in his third straight indoor competition of the year.

His two companions in the said Berlin meet joined him again at the podium. Oleg Zernikel, nonetheless, bagged silver this time over compatriot Torben Blech, despite identical 5.65-meter jumps.

Obiena looks to keep his run going with these indoor competitions to boost experience for the Olympic Games set to start in July of this year.

Currently, the 30th Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and University of Santos product ranks 16th in the world in the discipline as of February 2.

World record-holder Armand Duplantis remains the biggest target, as the Swede presently holds the top spot.
