ECHO Loud bowed out of the 2023 World Cyber Games last Saturday.
The reigning MPL Philippines champion suffered a surprising sweep at the hands of ONIC Overlord, losing 0-2 in the lower bracket semifinals at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center in South Korea.
During Game 1, ECHO Loud had the opportunity to close and take the victory after three ONIC members went down during a 14th-minute skirmish. However, a superb base defense by Dee (Moskov) and Owenn (Kaja) turned the game around for the Indonesians.
In Game 2, OWENN once again took charge with his Grock as the MDL squad wreaked havoc during the last Lord skirmish, deteriorating ECHO’s composure and wiping them out in just 12 minutes.
ONIC Overlord eventually finished their WCG run in third place after losing to the eventual grand finalist, EVOS Icon, in a sweep.
Meanwhile, ECHO Loud – the lone MPL squad in the tournament and undoubtedly the best team on paper – ended the four-team playoffs in fourth place.
The organization’s MDL squad, ECHO Proud, will face EVOS Icon once again in the grand finals on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. (Philippine time). (Jan Marcus Montevirgen)
