EASL: Spellman, Abando lead demolition as Anyang buries San Miguel with 55-point rout

Coming off a 96-68 loss to the B.League’s Ryukyu, San Miguel was turned target practice by KBL team Anyang KGC, suffering a humiliating 87-142 drubbing to bow out of the 2023 East Asia Champions Week, Saturday at Okinawa Arena.

Omari Spellman dropped a whopping 53 points on the porous Beermen defense. He was supported by Filipino swingman Rhenz Abando, who got 22 points.

Daryl Monroe grabbed 17 rebounds and dished 14 assists in the one-sided affair.

Going up against a Korean team, Jorge Gallent, who did not have June Mar Fajardo, decided to go to a 2-3 zone in the opening frame — a big no-no against players who are born to shoot.

Anyang KGC exposed San Miguel right from the get-go, going 16-of-21 from the field — including 11-of-12 from the inside to gain a 40-20 first quarter lead.

The Korean club never cooled down, breaking the 100-point barrier by the third canto.

As the dust settled, Anyang KGC ended up shooting 51-of-86 from the field, including knocking down 22 triples.

Cameron Clark was the sole bright spot for San Miguel with 35 points and 10 rebounds.
