Olivarez College leaned on a dominant third-quarter performance to defeat host Diliman College, 84-73, in the UCAL-PGFlex Linoleum 7th Season on Thursday at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Cristian Allen Vergara contributed 9 of his 16 points in the third quarter, including a crucial three-pointer that extended their lead to 63-52, up from a slim 45-40 advantage at halftime. The Sealions skillfully protected their lead to secure the win.
Hanz Philip Maykong, who also played a key role in Olivarez’s breakaway, led all scorers with 20 points while also contributing 7 rebounds and 1 assist. His performance helped hand the Blue Dragons their second loss in four games of the 10-school tournament.
In the second game, Philippine Christian University-Dasmarinas (PCU-D) held off Immaculada Concepcion College (ICC), 79-76, thanks to clutch free throws from Jay-R Pronda.
Showing composure under pressure, Pronda sank two crucial free throws in the final 11 seconds, thwarting ICC’s late comeback. Alfred Joseph Flores had scored 7 consecutive points, including a 3-pointer that brought the Bluehawks within 77-76 with 19 seconds left.
With these victories, Olivarez and PCU-D joined Manila Central University in a three-way tie for second place, each with a 3-1 record.
