Creamline looks to rebound, secure PVL QR spot against surging Farm Fresh

Foiled in its bid to advance the last time out, Creamline gets another chance to clinch a coveted qualifying-round berth tonight – or risk getting dragged deeper into a chaotic race for the final Top Four slots in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.

The Cool Smashers face the resurgent Farm Fresh Foxies at 6:30 p.m. as the preliminaries shift to the Santa Rosa Sports Complex.

According to sportsbook Casinoplus, Creamline enters the match as a -1.5 favorite, meaning the Cool Smashers are expected to win either in a sweep or in four sets. The total points over-under is set at 175.5 for the contest.

Creamline appeared headed for a comfortable entry to the next phase before a red-hot Akari squad halted its momentum last Thursday, handing the Cool Smashers a four-set defeat that dropped them to 5-2 and threw the battle for the last two qualifying spots wide open.

PLDT and Cignal have already secured their places in the Qualifying Round, but the remaining two slots are still up for grabs in a tightly packed race involving Creamline, Nxled, Akari, and Farm Fresh.

Nxled currently holds fourth place with a 4-4 record, but has only one game left. Akari is close behind at 4-3, while Farm Fresh remains in contention at 3-4 with two matches still to play.

Creamline also has one more assignment after Tuesday – a showdown against Cignal on Saturday to close out the grueling preliminaries of the season-ending conference organized by Sports Vision.

Should the Cool Smashers stumble in their final two matches and two of the chasing teams finish at 5-4, a tiebreaker scenario could determine which squads secure the last two qualifying-round berths.

That possibility only heightens the pressure as the race intensifies entering the final stretch of the prelims phase.

Teams finishing from No. 5 to No. 10 will drop to the Play-In stage, where they will be divided into two groups. The two group winners will then challenge the losers of the crossover matches among the Top Four for the final semifinal spots.

While Creamline has lost back-to-back games in the franchise’s decorated PVL campaign, the Cool Smashers remain focused on bouncing back quickly and avoiding the complications of the Play-In round.

But Farm Fresh has proven it can thrive under pressure.

The Foxies stayed alive in the Top Four chase after a gritty five-set victory over the Choco Mucho Flying Titans last week and are eager to pull off another upset to keep their qualifying hopes alive.

They will lean heavily on Trisha Tubu, the conference’s second-leading scorer, with setter Alohi Robins-Hardy orchestrating the offense alongside veterans Ces Molina, Royse Tubino, Mylene Paat, Ara Galang, and Riri Meneses. Jolina dela Cruz, Rizza Cruz, and Lorene Toring are also expected to provide key support.

Creamline’s loss to Akari may have exposed some cracks, but the Cool Smashers are well accustomed to high-pressure situations.

Jema Galanza has rediscovered her devastating form, leading the attack in recent games alongside Tots Carlos. However, Bernadeth Pons, Michele Gumabao, Pangs Panaga, and Bea De Leon must deliver consistent performances if the 10-time champions are to avoid further complications.

Meanwhile, Akari aims to extend its remarkable turnaround when it faces struggling Galeries Tower in the 4 p.m. opener.

The Chargers also enter their match as a -1.5 favorite according to Casinoplus, meaning they are likewise expected to win in straight sets or in four sets. The total points over-under for the match is set at 172.5.

After losing its first three matches, the Chargers have rattled off four straight victories to re-enter the qualifying race and now loom as serious contenders for a Top Four finish.

“For us, we remain humble muna. Balik lang sa dati, balik lang ulit sa baba. Kung pagod ngayon, pahinga lang ulit, so hanap ng maayos na inspirasyon, maayos na nutrition, and recovery,” said Akari head coach Tina Salak.

“Trabaho lang. Nothing new, dere-deretso lang. Kung ito yung nagwo-work sa amin, whatever works, tuloy lang. We see the light,” she added.

Salak has molded the squad into a cohesive and dangerous unit, with Ivy Lacsina regaining her dominant form, Grethcel Soltones providing clutch scoring, Eli Soyud surging, and middle blockers Fifi Sharma and Ced Domingo controlling the net on both ends.

With Mars Alba directing the offense and Justine Jazareno anchoring the floor defense, Akari enters the match as the clear favorite against the Highrisers, who have dropped their last three games after an earlier upset of the Nxled Chameleons.

With multiple teams still in striking distance, the fight for the final two qualifying spots promises a dramatic finish to the PVL preliminaries.
