Consistent Baron finding peak at opportune time

As far as middles blockers go, there are few better in the country than La Salle’s Majoy Baron.

From the plodding pace she had played during her first years in the UAAP, the six-foot Tarlac native has elevated her game to a deadly form that garnered a Best Blocker nod in Season 78 and is fueling the De La Salle University’s current campaign.

Since last season, Baron has been La Salle’s most efficient weapon, piling up points through quick attacks, solid read blocks, and her much-improved service game. This season, with several of La Salle’s past pillars gone, Baron hsd ramped up her production, scoring in double-digits consistently.

The Lady Spikers are currently tied for the top seed with a 9-2 record, and are still undefeated in the second round. In their current four-game rampage, Baron is averaging 10 points per match, which includes nearly two blocks and two aces.

“For me, this second round hinanap ko talaga ‘yung right motivation and confidence. Ayon, lumalabas na ‘yung natural kong kayang gawin. Parang nakuha ko ‘din ‘yung confidence every time I play well and I take into the next game,” the 21-year-old told Tiebreaker Times after La Salle’s three-set win over the University of the East.

“Noong first round, parang hinahanap ko pa talaga ‘yung laro ko. I think lahat ng players may peak talaga na kailangan mag-build towards doon. Ito, I can say that I’m confident with how I’m playing. Personally, nagpi-peak ako.”

“For me, mas nakikita ko ‘yung cohesiveness and confidence namin. Noon first round, may getting to know phase pa kami. Pero ngayon, mas nag-gegel na kami,” said Baron.

“Siguro, importante sa amin ngayon na just to keep focused on every match and every opponent. We’re going to need to execute lahat nang ginagawa namin sa practices talaga.”
