Columbian breaks Governors’ Cup curse, sweeps Season 43 series against Rain or Shine

The Columbian Dyip have finally ended their 25-game losing skid in the PBA Governors’ Cup by scoring a 100-84 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Friday evening at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

This is Dyip’s first victory in the season-ending conference since 2016. They also swept RoS this season – they scored a 104-96 win over them back in the Philippine Cup, followed by a 98-94 triumph in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Columbian’s win total last season was just six, and Friday’s win means they have equaled that count – they only had one victory in the All-Filipino tilt, and collected four in the mid-season conference.

“The last time [na nanalo ako as head coach], GlobalPort pa,” said head coach Johnedel Cardel, who has finally earned his first win as Dyip head coach. “Yung Rain or Shine parang suki namin. Natsa-tsambahan namin lagi.”

The also-ran Dyip have improved to 1-9. Their win over Rain or Shine, according to the league’s chief statistician Fidel Mangonon, has assured the quarterfinal entry of the Alaska Aces, the Blackwater Elite, and the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Import Akeem Wright has finally tasted a win in the PBA, leading Columbian with 23 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Guards Jerramy King and Rashawn McCarthy made a huge imprint on the win as well. The former had 18 points and six rebounds, while the latter provided 16 markers, seven rebounds, and six assists with a game-high four steals.

The Dyip started hot, as they left the Elasto Painters in the dust with a 20-6 start. But Rain or Shine managed to claw their way back, and even had a 61-57 lead after a Terrence Watson basket with 4:20 left in the third.

But Columbian showed character in the final frame. With Scott and King conniving on offense, the Dyip pulled away wide en route to a 91-70 lead with 3:04 left in the game, which was more than enough to seal the deal.

Ronald Tubid added 16 markers for Dyip.

Watson led an exhausted Rain or Shine – they last played barely 48 hours ago versus the NorthPort Batang Pier – with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Maverick Ahanmisi had 16 points, and Gabe Norwood had 11 and nine boards.

Chris Tiu, who had a career-high 23 markers versus NorthPort, was held scoreless and shot just twice.

The Elasto Painters played the majority of the match without Beau Belga, as the stocky 6-foot-6 slotman suffered an apparent leg injury with 1:47 left in the opening frame. Belga left the game with seven points and two caroms.

The Scores:

Columbian 100 – Wright 23, King 18, McCarthy 16, Tubid 16, Cahilig 13, Reyes 5, Corpuz 4, Celda 3, Ababou 2, Khobuntin 0, Escoto 0.
