Cherry Rondina, UST start quest for three-peat on high note

Sisi Rondina is determined to get a fourth title to end her UAAP beach volleyball career, leading the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and new partner Babylove Barbon to a convincing win over University of the Philippines Lady Maroons Isa Molde and Justine Dorog, 21-12, 21-12, at SM Sands by the Bay.

The Sand Tigresses dominated the match, never letting their foes from Diliman sniff the lead.

Rondina, who has won every local beach volleyball tournament she has joined, wants to end her career on the sandcourt with a title.

Rookie Barbon is Rondina’s fourth partner, as she won a title with Rica Rivera in Season 77, with Jem Gutierrez in Season 79, and Caitlyn Viray in Season 80.

“Same lang naman. Medyo, for me lang naman, hindi siya pressure, nasa-sad lang ako kasi siyempre last year,” admitted the graduating BS Physical Education major.

“Sana makuha namin ‘to para maganda ‘yung exit. Siyempre, hindi rin kami… ako papayag na aalis akong walang makuha. Tatrabahuhin pa rin namin. Magkakabuhusan na lang talaga,” the elite beach volleyball athlete added.

La Salle’s Michelle Morente and Tin Tiamzon pulled the rug from FEU’s Ivana Agudo and Marian Calinawan, 21-14, 20-22, 15-10.

National University’s pair of rookies Klymince Orilleneda and Antonette Landicho dropped Ateneo’s Ponggay Gaston and Jules Samonte, 21-11, 21-14. Adamson’s newbies Gracel Ave and Hannah Infante drubbed UE’s Rhea Manalo and Lyen Ritual, 21-14, 21-15.

Women’s action resumes tomorrow morning with a second batch of matches in the afternoon.
