There was a new face on Meralco’s bench when it took on Phoenix Super LPG, Wednesday evening at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
Charles Tiu made his Bolts’ debut during the game as he joined the staff of head coach Norman Black.
This marks the 32-year-old Tiu’s return to the Philippine Basketball Association as part of a team’s staff. Back in 2013, he was part of Rajko Toroman’s team in Barako Bull.
Black and Tiu go back a long way as the latter played for the decorated mentor in Ateneo’s Glory Be squad during the late 2000s.
“I’ve known Charles for a long time in college. He could come in and help us that is why we recruited him for the coaching staff,” said Black.
“I’m hoping this time I can help coach Norman even a little – since I never made his Ateneo teams and was of no use during his championship runs there,” quipped Tiu, who was part of Ateneo’s team that won the 2009 University Games.
In Meralco, Tiu will join lead assistant Ronnie Magsanoc, Luigi Trillo, Gene Afable, and Patrick Fran.
Tiu himself has gained a lot of knowledge since 2013.
The 32-year-old tactician steered Mighty Sports to a couple of Jones Cup crowns and the 2019 Dubai International Basketball Championship. Tiu was also an assistant coach for College of Saint Benilde.
And he looks to learn and deliver with the Bolts.
“Well, it feels great to be part of a great organization and it’s a great opportunity for me to learn from a great coach and an equally great coaching staff.”
