Brooke Van Sickle has nothing but respect for fellow league MVP Sisi Rondina following Choco Mucho’s opening-day clash against Petro Gazz in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.
Van Sickle and Rondina, the reigning and former MVPs of the all-local tilt, went head-to-head in a much-anticipated match-up last Saturday at the Philsports Arena.
Van Sickle led the Angels to a four-set victory, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21, 25-16, over Rondina and the Flying Titans.
“Sisi’s just Sisi. The first time that I ever played her, I just remember – and I know other players have said this too – but she’s just phenomenal,” Van Sickle said.
Even after facing her a few times in the previous season, the University of Oregon product remains in awe of how the pint-sized Rondina plays beyond her 5-foot-6 frame.
“She’s amazing. It’s just crazy. I remember she hit a ball, and I was sitting there like, ‘How’s someone so small jumping so high?’ It’s just impressive,” she recalled.
Van Sickle exploded for 34 points, with 28 attacks, four aces, and two kill blocks, along with 14 excellent digs, in Petro Gazz’s triumph over Choco Mucho.
Meanwhile, Rondina had an all-around effort for the Flying Titans, scoring 18 points – 17 of which came from attacks – to go along with 13 excellent digs and six excellent receptions.
“She’s just a powerhouse. That girl has grit and determination. I’ve watched all the games when scouting. Even watching all the last conferences, she doesn’t give up,” said the 26-year-old hitter from Hawaii.
Although Choco Mucho started the lengthy All-Filipino Conference on the wrong foot, Van Sickle believes they will quickly find their rhythm with Rondina leading the way.
“Save maybe she might have a slow start, she doesn’t care. She’ll just come back. She’s just that kind of player. Hats off to her – I super respect her. She’s amazing. Today’s not their day, but they’re gonna come back bouncing back. So definitely, we’ll see more of them for sure.”
