Boyet Fernandez’s legendary run as San Beda University head coach has come to an end after seven years.
Fernandez and his staff have officially been let go by the university after an online meeting on Sunday.
Multiple sources closely monitoring the situation have confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times.
In a statement to the community, the 50-year-old native of Bacolod expressed his gratitude to the school for accepting him as one of their own.
“Thank you so much to everyone, your messages give me strength in these trying times, so long until we meet again! God bless us all.”
During his seven-year stay in San Beda – first from 2013-14 and, later on, 2017-22 – Fernandez compiled an 86-13 record in the elimination round and 16-4 slate in the post-season.
He steered the school to four NCAA Seniors Basketball crowns.
“For six NCAA seasons I coached, we had six Final Fours, five finals appearances, and four seniors basketball crowns, it was not bad but I know I came up short with all your expectations last season and I will take all the blame for that,” he said.
However, the last two seasons have not been kind to the blue blood program.
San Beda lost to Letran in the NCAA Season 95 Finals while losing to Mapua in the Final Four two seasons later.
Also let go by the school are assistant coaches JB Sison, Gino Manuel, Joey Mendoza, conditioning coach LA Ratio, physical therapist Michael Sunga, and Jeric Estrada.
“I will surely miss all of you. Kita kits tayo soon! Animo San Beda!” closed Fernandez’s statement.
It won’t take long for Fernandez to find a new job, as he is a potential part of Gilas Pilipinas’ coaching staff.
