ONIC PH just caught its biggest fish in the MPL Philippines Season 10 after sweeping – and dominating – defending champion RSG PH on Sunday night.
The team composed of rookies brought out its best performance yet in its first foray into the professional scene, scoring a 2-0 win over the MSC champions, including a wire-to-wire minute victory in Game Two which only lasted for 11 minutes and 10 seconds.
Prior to the victory against RSG PH, ONIC PH already scored 2-1 wins over Bren Esports and ONIC PH but lost to ECHO in the same manner. This puts them at 3-1 after the second week – good for solo second in the standings.
Rookie head coach Kevin “Bluffzy” Reyes, who served as an assistant to former ONIC PH coach Denver “Yeb” Miranda last season, said that he did not expect his wards to put up such an outstanding performance early in this season.
Still, he was happy with the hard work his players showed throughout the league’s second week and hopes that they can continue the momentum moving forward.
“Siguro hindi kasi isa sa mga ginagawa namin is we’re setting expectations para hindi kami ganon ma-disappoint,” said Bluffzy after ONIC PH’s upset win over RSG PH at the ICITE Auditorium.
“Kung maganda yung mangyari salamat, kung hindi naman salamat pa rin. Kung ano yung lagi kong sinasabi, ginagawa lang namin yung best namin and tingin ko gumagana naman siya,” he added.
When asked if he considers the win against RSG PH as a statement, the former Cignal Ultra standout said that he was just glad to see his players get one over the reigning champions.
So, to answer the question? No. Not yet, perhaps.
“Hindi ko masasabi e. Kasi every win is actually… masaya ako kasi kumbaga nadadagdagan yung experiences ng mga bata regardless if kung anong team (yung talunin). Kasi the fact na nasa MPL (kami) at MPL caliber yung mga natatalo namin, masaya talaga kami,” said Bluffzy.
“Pero statement win? Hindi pa siguro.”
