An MVP Like Never Before
De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Majoy Baron will be named as the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Volleyball Most Valuable Player.
The 20-year-old middle hitter averaged 10.7 points per contest (10th in the league) with a 38 attack percentage during the regular season.
She will be the first La Salle player to be crowned as MVP since Ara Galang and Aby Marano shared the award back in the league’s 75th season.
This will be Baron’s second individual award in the UAAP after winning last season’s Best Blocker crown.
Jaja Santiago of the National University Lady Bulldogs will bring home a lot of hardware as well, as she will be crowned as the league’s Best Scorer, Best Attacker, and Best Blocker.
The 21-year-old topped the scoring department with 19.14 points per contest (195 attacks, 49 kill blocks, 24 aces). This will be her third straight Best Attacker award.
However, she was not in consideration for MVP as the Lady Bulldogs failed to reach the Final Four this season.
Baron’s teammate and La Salle skipper Kim Fajardo bested Ateneo de Manila University’s Jia Morado once more for Best Setter.
The La Salle senior averaged 11.28 excellent sets per set, edging Morado (11.04 excellent sets/set).
She will also bag the Best Server award for the second year in a row.
La Salle’s Dawn Macandili and University of the East Lady Warriors libero Kath Arado will once again split the Best Receiver and Best Digger plums.
Macandili, a PSL MVP, had a 50.71 percent efficiency rating, while Arado normed 6.6 digs per set.
In a class of her own, Jules Samonte of the Ateneo Lady Eagles will win the Rookie of the Year award.
The UAAP Season 79 Volleyball awarding ceremony will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, May 6.
