Team Pilipinas’ Wushu artists have made the country proud once again.
Arnel Mandal brought home gold in the recently-concluded 9th Wushu Sanda World Cup of the Wushu World Championships from October 28-29 in Guangzhou, China.
Mandal, who is just 23 years young, took the championship in the minus-52 kilogram category. He bested Vietnamese foe and previous-world champion Minh Duc Vu, and Algerian opponent Benghenem Abdelkarim to win the world championship in the division.
The Ilonggo was not able to compete in the Asian Games, as there was no -52kg division during the Jakarta-Palembang Games.
Mandal also won gold during the 13th World Wushu Championships back in 2015.
Besides Mandal, two more wushu artists were able to bag medals in the world championship.
Divine Wally settled for bronze in the women’s minus-48 kilogram event, falling to Chinese fighter Dai Shimeng in the semifinals. On the other hand, Francisco Solis finished with silver. The 28-year-old lost to Chinese foe LI Kang in the finale of the minus-56 kilogram division.
