Allen Liwag not fazed by pressure of filling Will Gozum’s shoes

College of Saint Benilde has a storied history of fielding dominant big men in the NCAA Seniors Basketball Tournament, and the tradition continues with their latest star – Allen Liwag.

In recent years, the Blazers were led by Will Gozum, whose impact on the team was nothing short of remarkable.

Over his three seasons with Benilde, the 6-foot-6 foward led the team to two Final Four appearances and a Finals run, earning an MVP award along the way.

His departure left a significant void, and many wondered how Benilde would find a suitable replacement.

Fortunately for head coach Charles Tiu, the answer came in the form of former EAC standout Allen Liwag.

Liwag, who stands at 6-foot-6, has already proven himself to be a dominant force in the paint, much like his predecessor.

In his debut for the Blazers, he faced off against Mapua University – the team that had previously eliminated Gozum and Benilde from the Final Four.

Despite Mapua’s success in stifling Gozum’s performance last season, they found themselves unable to contain Liwag.

Although the Blazers fell behind early, Liwag’s relentless energy on the boards and his deft scoring around the paint kept his team within striking distance.

His efforts culminated in a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback, securing a 78-65 victory for Benilde.

Liwag’s performance was stellar, finishing with 22 points and 18 rebounds, proving to be a formidable presence against Mapua’s bigs.

Facing comparisons to Gozum is inevitable, but Liwag remains focused and grounded.

“Siyempre may pressure kasi iba yung Will Gozum eh, pero hindi ko na masyadong iniisip yun. One game at a time lang,” Liwag remarked after the win.

For Liwag, the focus is on embracing his leadership role on a retooled Benilde team. He feels determined to help the team replicate, if not surpass, the success achieved under Gozum.

“Siguro yung lagi lang sinasabi nila coach na maging leader kami sa team. Mas na-feel ko lang in-game na lumalabas na yung laro ko kasi sa tiwala ng mga coach at ng mga teammates ko,” he added.

Looking ahead, Liwag and the Blazers face a tough challenge. They now prepare to go up against the defending champions San Beda Red Lions on Tuesday at 2:30 PM at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
