UST extends unbeaten streak to three, sweeps San Beda

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses notched another straight-set decision, waylaying the San Beda University Lady Red Spikers, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21, in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

In their 3-0 start, the Tigresses have yet to drop a set, although they came close to facing a fourth frame against San Beda.

A wasteful start cost UST a 5-8 deficit, which they needed to slowly erase. Tying the set at 20, the Tigresses went to second year Fil-Italian winger Milena Alessandrini, who drove in three spikes in UST’s last five points.

“Sabi ko nga sa mga rookie ko na sa papel lang sila rookie. Marami na silang nalarong big games even before pa,” said UST head coach Kungfu Reyes of his team’s slow start to the third set. “Talagang inaayos namin sa kanila ‘yung errors. Hindi pwedeng nagsasayang kami ng puntos sa kanila.”

UST wunderkind Eya Laure tallied 14 points, while Alessandrini managed 11.

Nieza Viray towed the Lady Red Spikers with 17 points, as they played without captain Cesca Racraquin due to an injury.

UST (3-0) stake their hot start against UAAP rivals University of the Philippines (1-0) next Sunday. San Beda (0-2) face the CSB Lady Blazers (0-3) on Thursday. Both games are at the same venue.
