Gumabao carries Cocolife in sweep of Cherrylume

Michele Gumabao anchored the Cocolife Asset Managers as they made quick work of the Cherrylume Iron Lady Warriors in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-11, in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference, Thursday night at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The 5-foot-10 spiker churned out 15 points, 12 coming from attacks, two blocks, and a service ace to give her side their first win in Group B. Wensh Tiu added eight markers, while Joanne Bunag got six in the win.

Motivated from their defeat to Generika Ayala last Tuesday, Cocolife hardly broke into a sweat as they dispatched Cherrylume in the three-set win.

Despite the victory, coach Kungfu Reyes believes that his side is still far from the championship form he wants from his crew as he searches for another scoring source aside from Gumabao.

“Marami pa kaming kulang, lalo na’t wala kaming pang-diin. Pero kailangan naming mag strive para makagawa kami ng go-to-guy namin para hindi lagi si Michele (Gumabao) lagi ang gagawa,” he said.

Mary Ann Mendrez topped the Iron Lady Warriors with 11 points in the loss.

Cocolife (1-1) will battle Foton on Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m., while Cherrylume (0-2) continue their hunt for a breakthrough victory against Generika Ayala next Thursday, June 15, in Bacoor, Cavite.

The Scores:

Cocolife (3) – Gumabao 15, Tiu 8, Bunag 6, Sandoval 5, Cayuna 5, Alkuino 4, Dizon 3, Villareal 2, Tejada 1, Palec 1, Esperanza 0, Francisco 0, Lazaro (L), Dusaran (L).
